Stay in the village or nearby?

Staying inside Santa Claus Village means you can walk to Santa's office, the Arctic Circle line and the shops in a few minutes, which is ideal with small children. The trade-off is more people and more light around you, which makes aurora watching from your room harder.

Resorts 10–20 minutes away, on the hills and lakes around Rovaniemi, give you darker skies, more privacy and usually more space, with Santa Claus Village still an easy taxi or shuttle ride away. For a stay of three nights or more, many families find this the better balance.

Visiting Santa Claus Village

Santa Claus Village is open all year and entry is free. You can meet Santa in his office, cross the Arctic Circle line, send a letter from Santa's main post office and try reindeer and husky rides at the edge of the village. In December, expect queues to meet Santa; arriving early in the morning helps.

SantaPark, a separate underground attraction a couple of kilometres away, is a good addition for families with younger children.

Tips for families

Book December stays early, ideally 9–12 months ahead. Choose a unit where everyone sleeps together and there is room to dry winter clothing. Check whether the resort lends thermal overalls and boots for children, and plan Santa Claus Village for your first or second day so you are not rushing before your flight home.
