The best resorts in Lapland to see the northern lights

Seeing the aurora comes down to three things: dark skies, clear weather and being awake at the right moment. A glass roof above the bed, an aurora alert and little light pollution all help.

How to maximise your chances

Stay several nights rather than one, choose a resort away from town lights, and use an aurora forecast or the resort's alert so you do not have to stay up all night. The best activity is usually between 21:00 and 02:00. A glass roof lets you watch from bed; a private hot tub or a dark terrace lets you watch outside without driving anywhere.

When to go

The aurora season in Finnish Lapland runs from late August to early April. Around the equinoxes, in September–October and February–March, geomagnetic activity tends to be higher and skies are often clearer than in December. Autumn adds reflections on unfrozen lakes.

Does latitude matter?

All the resorts we compare are inside the auroral zone. Further north the aurora is overhead slightly more often, but weather decides most nights, and a cloudy far-north resort sees less than a clear one on the Arctic Circle. If you want certainty of trying, combine your stay with a guided aurora tour that drives to clearer skies.

Northern lights: frequently asked questions

When is the best time to see the northern lights in Lapland?

From late August to early April, between about 21:00 and 02:00. Autumn and late winter often have clearer skies than December.

Is it better to go further north for the aurora?

Further north (Saariselkä, Inari) the aurora is overhead slightly more often, but weather decides most nights. Rovaniemi has frequent displays and far easier access.

What is an aurora alert?

A wake-up call, app notification or alarm that the resort sends when the northern lights appear, based on forecasts, sensors or staff watching the sky. It lets you sleep instead of checking the sky all night.

Can the northern lights be guaranteed?

No resort can guarantee the aurora, because it depends on solar activity and clear skies. Staying several nights and joining a guided aurora tour that drives to clearer areas gives you the best chance.

Can you photograph the northern lights with a phone?

Yes. Recent smartphones have night modes that capture the aurora well. Keep the phone steady on a surface or tripod, turn off the flash and use a 3–10 second exposure if your phone allows it.
