Levi vs Rovaniemi: which should you choose?

Two of Lapland's most popular bases, 170 km apart and very different in character. Here is how they compare and who each one suits.

Rovaniemi in a nutshell

Rovaniemi is Lapland's capital and its main gateway, with the most direct winter flights and the airport minutes from Santa Claus Village. It has the widest choice of safaris, restaurants and accommodation, from the town centre to glass igloo resorts on the surrounding hills. It is the easiest choice for a first trip, a short break or a family holiday built around Santa Claus.

Levi in a nutshell

Levi is Finland's largest ski resort, a compact village at the foot of Levi fell with downhill slopes, cross-country trails and lively après-ski. Glass igloo resorts sit on the fells and riversides around the village, often with wide views. Flights land at Kittilä, 15–30 minutes away, or it is about 2.5 hours by road from Rovaniemi.

Northern lights

Both are inside the auroral zone and see the northern lights regularly between late August and early April. Levi is about 1.2 degrees further north, which slightly increases how often the aurora is overhead, but cloud cover decides most nights in both places. A dark resort outside the town or village matters more than the choice between the two.

Which one to choose

Choose Rovaniemi for Santa Claus Village, the easiest flights, the widest choice of activities and the shortest transfers. Choose Levi if downhill skiing is a priority, or if you want a ski-village atmosphere. With six nights or more you can combine both: three nights in Rovaniemi, then the drive or a bus north to Levi.
